Let There Be Light

NEW DATE ADDED: Wednesday, March 3rd

Date: Thursday, January 14th (SOLD OUT)

Time: 7:00-9:00 PM via online video conferencing from your own home

Early Bird $65+hst (after January 10th $85+hst)

Photography requires light but what happens when there isn’t enough natural light available for the photos you want to take?  Artificial light can be used to supplement the natural light you have available, replace natural light, or it can be used for purely artistic purposes.

The goal of this workshop is to:

  • Understand four artificial light options (off camera flash, strobe, continuous light, LED light).
  • Review the pros and cons of each type of light.
  • Introduce participants to the first steps in using artificial light.
  • Review which subjects and scenes could benefit from artificial light.

The structure of this workshop:

  • Theory and practical tips
  • Reviewing images that use each of the four different types of light
  • Custom homework assignment for each participant as well as feedback on your homework images.

The workshop will be recorded and you will have access to the recording after the workshop.

If you are ready to begin experimenting with artificial light, this is the workshop for you!

Lifestyle & Documentary Photography

NEW DATE ADDED: Wednesday, February 17th  (SOLD OUT)

Date: Thursday, January 28 (SOLD OUT)

Time: 7:00 - 9:00 PM via online video conferencing from your own home

Early Bird $65+hst (after January 10th $85+hst)

Real life is messy, unpredictable, and not very pretty, which is one of the biggest challenges photographers face when capturing their daily lives.  We gravitate towards portrait photography (even light, posed subjects, neat backdrops) because it’s typically what we know from our own childhood but more often than not our lives aren’t well suited to capturing the “perfect” moment.

Understanding the differences between portrait, lifestyle, and documentary photography are key when you spend most of your time photographing your family, friends, and adventures.  In our eagerness to get the “perfect” photo we miss out on the real moments that are happening around us every day, which can be captured beautifully with patience and a solid understanding of light and camera settings.

The goal of this workshop is to:

  • Understand the three different genres of photography (portrait, lifestyle, documentary).
  • Learn how to use the key features of each style of photography to photograph different scenarios.
  • Understanding the most common challenges of each style and strategies to ensure success.
  • Understanding the decision making process involved in deciding which style is best for the scenario you are photographing.

The structure of this workshop:

  • Theory and practical tips
  • Critical review of images of the three different styles
  • Review of photographs to identify key features of each style.
  • Custom homework assignment for each participant as well as feedback on your homework images.  For those struggling with the light and set-up in their home, I’m happy to provide a video consult after the workshop to troubleshoot.

After the workshop I will provide all participants with a homework assignment that will be submitted for feedback. The workshop will be recorded and you will have access to the recording after the workshop.

If you find yourself missing out on candid and unplanned photos and / or struggling to capture your life without getting frustrated or you feel like your photos all look the same, this is the workshop for you!

High key / Low Key Light

NEW DATE ADDED: Monday, March 29th

Date: Wednesday, February 10th (SOLD OUT)

Time: 7:00-9:00 PM via live video conferencing from your own home

Early Bird $65+hst (after January 10th $85+hst)

Low key images are photographs that have mainly dark tones and colours.  They are typically taken in lower light situations and have more contrast and a more dramatic appearance.  In contrast, high key images are very bright and airy.  There are fewer shadows and much less contrast.

One of the challenges we all face is taking photos in the same environment day after day.  Understanding low key and high key photographs is a great way to create variety in your images.  Learning how to manipulate light (and your settings) to create bright, airy images or dark, moody images, gives you control to create beautiful photos when you’re faced with less than ideal light or backgrounds.

The goal of this workshop is to introduce you to:

  • Manipulating light to create two very different styles of images
  • Manipulating your settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) in the same light to create vastly different photographs
  • Finding pockets of light / dark to create high and low key images
  • Better placing of your subject in relation to the light to set the mood for your images
  • Editing your high key and low key images

The structure of this workshop:

  • Theory and practical tips
  • Reviewing the entire process of creating high key and low key images
  • Custom homework assignment for each participant as well as feedback on your homework images.

After the workshop I will provide all participants with a homework assignment that will be submitted for feedback. The workshop will be recorded and you will have access to the recording after the workshop.

If you find yourself drawn to dramatically lit photos but don’t understand how to replicate the light in your own photos, this is the workshop for you!

Photographing People

NEW DATE ADDED: Thursday, January 21st  (SOLD OUT)

DATE: Monday, February 22nd (SOLD OUT)

Time: 7:00 - 9:00 PM via live video conferencing from your own home

Early Bird $65+hst (after January 10th $85+hst)

It turns out that learning all about your exposure triangle and how to master the settings on your camera was the easy part!  Oftentimes our biggest challenges come from convincing the people in our lives to cooperate for photos.  I’ve photographed over 4000 sessions over the last 10 years and I’ve learned a lot about how to convince even the most reluctant subjects to enjoy being in front of my camera

The goal of this workshop is to teach you:

  • Camera settings to maximize success
  • Understanding the most common challenges and how to work with your subjects rather than against them
  • The differences between posed and candid photos and how to work with subjects to take both styles of portraits
  • Choosing the best light for your subject(s)
  • Setting up a photo ‘zone’ in your home or outdoors

The structure of this workshop:

  • Theory and practical tips
  • Straight out of camera images
  • Review of candid and posed portraits and learning to self-critique your own photos

If you find yourself struggling to take both posed and candid portraits of your family members and friends, this workshop is for you!

Macro Photography

DATE: Monday, March 8th (SOLD OUT)

Time: 7:00 - 9:00 pm via live video conferencing from your own home

Early Bird $65+hst (after January 10th $85+hst)

Photographers often struggle to create compelling and unique images when they photograph their subjects closeup.

The goal of this workshop is to teach you to:

  • Work with the light you have available
  • Photograph different subjects creatively
  • Use different accessories to get the shots you envision
  • Creatively compose your images
  • Use movement to create abstract and compelling photos

The structure of this workshop:

  • Theory and practical tips
  • Review of images and common mistakes
  • Straight out of camera images
  • Editing tips for fine tuning your images
  • Custom homework assignment for each participant as well as feedback on your homework images.

After the workshop I will provide all participants with a homework assignment that will be submitted for feedback. The workshop will be recorded and you will have access to the recording after the workshop.

If you are drawn to close up images of everyday objects and find yourself drawn to the beautiful textures, colours, and details all around you, this workshop is for you!
