Experimenting with Light
Date: Sunday, January 26
Time: 2:30 - 4:15 PM
Early Bird $75+hst (after December 1st $85+hst)
Photographers are known as “chasers of light” because of the time we dedicate to understanding, manipulating, and falling in love with the light we find around us. The light you use in your images can take your photos from simple to stunning.
The light you choose for your images is key to capturing mood, emotion, and to best showcase your chosen subject or scene. More often than not we struggle to find enough light, especially in the dark of winter, but the reality is that there are light sources all around us. Sometimes we forget that it’s not quantity but also the quality of light that helps to create magical photos.
During this workshop we will experiment with a variety of light sources (e.g., natural window light, candle light, flashlight, lamplight, LED/incandescent bulbs) as well as the diffusion of light, directionality of light, and how to use light effectively to highlight the most important aspects of your scene and to ensure the light you choose fits the mood you are trying to create. We will focus on both human subjects and inanimate objects.
One of the main goals of this workshop is to encourage you to expand your ability to photograph subjects in a wide variety of lighting circumstances and to have the ability to adapt your settings and compositions to the requirements of the light you find yourself faced with.

Photographing People
Date: Sunday, March 8
Time: 2:30 - 4:15 PM
Early Bird $75+hst (after December 1st $85+hst)
How often do you find yourself wanting to capture a beautiful photo of someone but you end up disappointed because your photograph isn’t flattering to your subject and doesn’t capture their personality or the emotion of the moment?
It turns out that learning all about your exposure triangle and how to master the settings on your camera was the easy part! Oftentimes our biggest challenges come from posing and interacting with our children, family, and friends because we don’t know what to tell them to do with their bodies, faces, arms, and legs or if we’re trying to capture a candid image we don’t know where to stand.
The goal of the workshop is to help you take more natural and flattering images of your family and friends. The focus will be on both posed and candid images.
During this hands on workshop we will focus on posing both children and adults. We will talk about posing as well as how to photograph people in candid moments.
Registration is limited so that everyone has a chance to practice and receive feedback
Registration closes February 19th. If there are not enough participants, the workshop will be cancelled.
Lifestyle & Documentary Photography
Date: Sunday, April 26
Time: 2:30 - 4:15 PM
Early Bird $75+hst (after December 1st $85+hst)
Real life is messy, unpredictable, and not very pretty, which is one of the biggest challenges photographers face when capturing their daily lives. We gravitate towards portrait photography (even light, posed subjects, neat backdrops) because it’s typically what we know from our own childhood but more often than not our lives aren’t well suited to capturing the “perfect” moment.
Understanding the differences between portrait, lifestyle, and documentary photography are key when you spend most of your time photographing your family, friends, and adventures. In our eagerness to get the “perfect” photo we miss out on the real moments that are happening around us every day, which can be captured beautifully with patience and a solid understanding of light and camera settings.
The mindset for lifestyle and documentary photography is much harder to embrace than most people expect but these types of photos require just as much skill as posed portraits.
The goal of this workshop is to develop an understanding of the different genres of photography (portrait, lifestyle, documentary), the key features of each style, as well as how they relate to the different photos you’re taking. During the workshop, I will set up a variety of scenarios and walk you through taking photos within each style so you can see the differences and understand the mindset and settings you need for each genre.
If you find yourself missing out on candid and unplanned photos and / or struggling to capture your life without getting frustrated or you feel like your photos all look the same, this is the workshop for you!
Registration is limited so that everyone has a chance to practice and receive feedback
Registration closes April 8th. If there are not enough participants, the workshop will be cancelled.
